Imo Governor: Rochas Okorocha,Calls For The Scrapping Of NYSC


Rochas Okorocha, has called for the scrapping of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and advocated for the setting up of specialized institutions to improve the standard of education in the country.
Okorocha who said this in a speech he delivered at the 50th anniversary lecture of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria in Kaduna State said the NYSC scheme had outlived its usefulness. “The NYSC was set up to promote unity but that has failed, so we need to look into other areas to improve the quality of education for our youths’ he said.

Autonomous Units in the Office of the Director-General: These are Public Relations Unit, Internal Audit Unit and Legal Unit.
Public Relations Unit: The Public Relations unit is headed by a Director (SGL 17) and the unit broadly takes responsibility for Protocol, communication, publications, and information as well as photography/video matters.

Administrative Structure of the NYSC:

The NYSC scheme is structured strategically within the framework of its enabling decree and mandate to achieve its set objectives. The structure is as follows:-

NATIONAL GOVERNING BOARD:
The National Governing Board is at the apex and the highest policy-making body of the scheme. Membership of the Board is drawn from various organizations and institutions which include committees of Vice-chancellors and Rectors of Polytechnics as well as the Army, the Police, the Nigerian Employers Consultative association and Representatives from the Geo-political zones.

Director-General of NYSC

Office of the Director-General: The Director-General is the Chief Executive of the Scheme and is charged with the day-to-day running of the scheme. He is to liaise with all functionaries of government for the smooth running of the Scheme and serve as secretary to the Board. Functions of the Director-General include t Directors on grade level 15. These are Operations and Common Services which are further divided as follows:-
•  Chief Executive and Accounting Officer responsible for the day-to-day running of the Scheme.
•  Implementation of the specified actions and programmes of the Scheme to achieve its objectives.
•  Implementation of policy decisions, provisions of the enabling decrees and amendments as they relate to call-up, placement and issuance of national service and exemption certificates.
•  Preparation of submission of annual report, budgets and accounts to appropriate quarters.
•  Maintenance of good public image for the scheme.
  Liaison with relevant collaborating agencies, especially corps producing institutions and training organizations.
•  Convening regular meetings of Management, Committees and Boards essential for the smooth operation of the scheme.
•  Responsible to the National Directorate or the accredited supervisory body.

Why Corpers Should Go to Farms and Rural Areas- Youth Minister

A former Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology in Kwara state and an outstanding journalist, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi studied Mass-Communication at University of Lagos and bagged a Masters Degree with distinction from the University of Sussex. Nigerian Technology Brand, VEDA introduces its Student and Corpers’ Laptop, Internet and Content Scheme (SLIC)

As part of its goal to empower and equip 100,000 students and youth corp members in 2013, emerging technology industry brand, VEDA, introduces its Student and Corpers’ Laptop, Internet and Content Scheme (SLIC), an initiative geared towards students in schools and graduates during their National Youth Service with the aim of empowering them with the 2 most important tools of the 21st century – a computer and internet access.

NYSC reschedules orientation camp for Bayelsa, Yobe, Borno.

The aftermath of flooding and insecurity in some Northern state has  made the management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced the postponement of orientation course for the 2012 Batch ‘C’ corps members posted to Bayelsa, Yobe and Borno States.The Deputy Director, Publications of the NYSC, Mr. Peter Atilola, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja. Atilola said the Bayelsa orientation was postponed due to the recent flood in the state, and the subsequent accommodation of displaced victims in the NYSC orientation camp in Kaiama.
According to him, the orientation will now commence from Nov. 28 to Dec. 19 at the NYSC orientation camp in Kaiama Grammar School, Kolokoma-Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

NYSC trains corpers in martial arts


Corpers deployed by the National Youth Service Corps to Anambra and Ogun states are being subjected to intensive training in martial arts.
Anambra Coordinator of the scheme, Mrs. Inyang Ekpe, and her Ogun counterpart, Mrs. Theresa Anosike, said this on Wednesday at the swearing-in of the 2012 Batch B corps members at NYSC orientation camps, Umunya and Sagamu respectively.
The Man O’War, the police, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps and the Nigeria Army are involved in the training of the corps members.
